The 3 Cyber PM Career Paths Nobody Talks About

Your Non-Traditional Route to Landing That First Cyber PM Role

In partnership with

Hello Fellow,

When most people think about this career path, they imagine one of two routes:

  1. Study computer science or cyber, then move up into PM.

  2. Get a generic PM job and hope for a cyber project assignment.

But the reality is that those aren't the only ways in. In fact, the most successful Cyber PMs I have worked with came through less obvious paths.

In Today's Issue, we'll explore:

  1. 3 under-the-radar career entry points into Cyber PM

  2. Which path makes sense depending on your background

  3. How to leverage your existing experience for your first opportunity

  4. Curated links for internships and placements to get you started

Why Alternative Paths Often Work Better

Cyber PMs aren't hired for following a prescribed career formula. They're valued because they can orchestrate complex security initiatives with diverse teams. Alternative paths provide unique perspectives, transferable skills, and proven adaptability that traditional candidates often lack.

The 3 Career Paths Nobody Discusses

Path 1: The Business Analyst Bridge

Transition from business analysis roles in any industry to cyber-focused project coordination.

Why it works: You already understand stakeholders, requirements gathering, and business priorities. Cyber projects need translators who can bridge "tech talk" and "business impact."

Next step: Highlight your stakeholder management track record and frame it as foundation for cyber project delivery.

Path 2: The Compliance Crossover

Every industry sector requires certain compliance frameworks whether it’s finance, healthcare or manufacturing etc. Leverage that experience from regulatory compliance into cyber compliance and risk management.

Why it works: You know how compliance actually works in practice. For example, your audit experience and risk frameworks provide immediate credibility in cyber governance projects.

Next step: Position your compliance background as direct preparation for cyber risk management and governance projects.

Path 3: The Operations Pivot

Move from operational project management (manufacturing, logistics, service delivery) into cyber operations and incident response coordination.

Why it works: You can manage high-pressure situations and coordinate multiple teams during critical situations. Your crisis management skills are gold in cyber.

Next step: Volunteer for projects with a security component in your current operations role, even if it's just managing timelines or coordinating responses.

How to Position Your Transition Strategically

Most career changers sabotage themselves before even applying. Avoid these mistakes:

Apologising for your background: Treating non-cyber experience as a weakness. Generic transition story: Saying you're "passionate about security" without demonstrating why.

Instead, position strategically:

Lead with your strengths: Highlight project successes requiring coordination, risk management, or stakeholder alignment.

Bridge the connection: Explicitly explain how your experience solves common cyber PM challenges.

Quantify your impact: Use metrics from your current field to show you deliver measurable results.

👉 Position your transition as an asset, not an obstacle, and hiring managers will see the value immediately.

Next up: Once you've identified your pathway, we'll cover how to handle the interviews and assessments in an upcoming issue.

Final Thought

There’s no “one way” into cybersecurity project management. The key is to play to your strengths:

  • Business skills → pivot via risk/compliance.

  • Tech background → volunteer for cyber-related delivery.

  • Early career → internships and placements give you the fastest lift-off.

👉 Which of these three paths feels closest to your story?
